Moving boxes, materials and better packing.
Good packing protects belongings, makes handling safer and helps the removal team place everything in the correct room. The aim is not simply to fill boxes, but to create secure, manageable loads.
Choose the right moving boxes
Small boxes
Use for books, tools, tins and other dense items. Smaller loads reduce the risk of boxes becoming unsafe to lift.
Medium boxes
Useful for general household contents, kitchenware, toys and mixed items that are not excessively heavy.
Large or specialist cartons
Use for light bulky contents, hanging clothes, pictures or other items needing a more suitable shape.
Materials worth having
- Strong packing tape and a tape dispenser
- Packing paper for individual items and filling gaps
- Bubble wrap or specialist protection where appropriate
- Clear marker pens and room labels
- Mattress, television or picture protection when required
- Resealable bags for fixings, clearly labelled to match the furniture
Pack room by room
Finish one area at a time and label boxes immediately. Keep sets and related parts together. Fill empty spaces so contents cannot move freely, but do not force a box to close or make it too heavy.
Plates are generally safer packed upright with protection between them. Wrap fragile objects individually and mark the box clearly, while remembering that a fragile label does not replace careful packing.
What should not go into ordinary boxes
- Important documents, jewellery and irreplaceable personal items
- Medicines needed during the move
- Leaking, flammable or hazardous substances
- Perishable food that cannot be transported safely
- Items prohibited by the agreed removal or storage arrangements
